BERKSHIRE ART ASSOCIATION SUPPORTS BASEBALL ART
PROJECT
PITTSFIELD, MA. BAATTER UP! On Tuesday,
Nov 1, from 6:30 to 8:00pm, the Berkshire Art Association
will hold an OPEN COMMUNITY MEETING in the Auditorium of
the Berkshire Athenaeum to discuss developing a
Baseball-themed public art project for the City of
Pittsfield for 2006 and 2007.
The meeting will include a brief history of baseball in
Pittsfield and the elements of the Berkshire Art
Association's proposal to date. Since the discovery of
documents in the city’s historical archives at the
Athenaeum that reveal Pittsfield has the earliest
reference to the game of Baseball (a bylaw banning it from
Park Square enacted in 1791), the concept of a public
memorial to the early days of the game has been under
discussion.
The purpose of the meeting is to seek input from the
general public as well as from any groups or individuals
who might wish to take an active role in the project. The
BAA is also hoping to gather a steering committee and
volunteers for special committees that will be needed as
the project unfolds.
This project is envisioned as a collaborative project with
many organizations participating.
Anticipated participants include the City of Pittsfield’s
Artscape Committee, The Berkshire Museum, First Home
Plate, Downtown, Inc., the Parks Department and the
Pittsfield Schools.
The general public, teachers, artists, baseball
enthusiasts, and local business people are invited to
attend the meeting.
